Huawei tests 40 Gigabit PON prototype

Huawei has tested what it claims is the industry's first 40 Gigabit passive optical network (PON) prototype. The Chinese equipment vendor worked with the China Telecom Beijing Research Institute to test the technology prototype.

Calient raises funds for data centre push

Calient Technologies, the optical switch specialist, has raised $19.4 million (€13.77 million) in its latest funding round. The sum will be used to develop and bring to market a more compact and power-efficient version of its existing 3D MEMS-based optical switch.

100G optical transmission spans the Pacific

Infinera has demonstrated its latest DTN-X system transmitting a 100 Gbps light path over a 9,500 km submarine link linking California to Japan. Working with Pacific Crossing, a subsidiary of NTT Communications, the system vendor claims this is the first time 100 Gbps coherent transmission has spanned the Pacific.

JDSU: Next-generation ROADM networks need new components

Transmode opts for coherent 100G in the metro

Transmode has adopted coherent detection technology for 100Gbps in metro networks.  The Swedish equipment vendor is not the first to offer a coherent solution for the metro; Ciena has 300km and 600km reach coherent line cards. But the decision contrasts with other recent metro announcements from Adva Optical Networking and MultiPhy, which are adopting 100Gbps direct detection.

MultiPhy targets the 100G metro market with MLSE receiver chip

MultiPhy has detailed its 100Gbps direct-detection receiver IC addressing the metro market. The MP1100Q IC is targeting two applications: a point-to-point module to connect data centers with a reach of up to 80km, and a DWDM design for metro, core and regional networks with a reach up to 800km.

Inphi first with chips to enable high-density 100G ports

Fabless semiconductor firm Inphi has announced the industry’s first 100Gbps physical layer (PHY) chip manufactured using standard CMOS processes. Also known as a “gearbox” IC, the PHY is a key component inside pluggable 100Gbps modules in the CFP form factor. It converts 10 electrical lanes at 10Gbps into 4 lanes at 25Gbps.

Opnext unveils first OIF-compliant 100G module

Opnext hopes to be the first to deliver a 100Gbps optical module that’s compliant with the framework set down by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) for long-haul optical transmission.  The company formally introduced the new product at ECOC, and expects to start mass production in the first quarter of next year.
